Rain fell steadily throughout the race and the cars skidded, slid, bumped, bashed and crashed.
The Budapest Grand Prix saw 10 teams field 19 cars that resulted in 12 crashes and two fatalities. This was by far the most destructive and deadly race of the season to date. Many teams will be entering the German Grand Prix without their top drivers and cars as they nurse injury, crumped car parts and depleted monetary reserves.
It wasn't pretty but the job got done. Budapest was the home track for the Mitteleuropeaeischer Motorwagon-Verein (MEEW) and in dramatic fashion they took the pole position, crashed a car and in the final turn caught the UK Dairyman's Association and streaked past the finish line to the glee of the home town crowd. MEEW's excitement about winning was offset by the loss of the teams top driver Raymond Sommer. The Dairymen took second place followed by the French team, which was many turns behind, for third. By the last lap of the race the cars were spaced out, and the track was liberally littered with debris.
The current standings are posted here.
Fans will now turn their attention to the German Grand Prix and it will prove to be an epic event. The race is set to start early and the teams, drivers and crowd are all hoping for clear weather.
