| Stuck at the start followed by Carraciola and Nuvolari. |
At the start, the French team took the lead early with Hans Stuck in his big Type A Auto Union followed by Nuvolari and Carraciola. The rain was stead throughout the race and while everyone slid around the corners the rain master Carraciola seemed not to notice, enjoying the refreshing mist from his windshield.
Hans Stuck on the other hand seemed to be having a hard time controlling his car and while still being in the lead, by the second lap his car was in terrible shape and Achille Varzi, driving for the Auto Club d'Monaco, and charging up from a 10th position start, was challenging Stuck for the lead. It was at this time that the French team made a critical decision, and much to the appall of the crowd, Stuck retired from the race, handing his lead to is teammate Laszlo Hartmann. The German team was heard remarking, "What's his name? This no-name driver. We won't remember him."
| The stress of the lead! |
But Hartmann continued to built on Stuck's lead. By the third lap Varzi had captured the lead and Carraciola charged out of the pits with fresh tires but no transmission. On the top corner Varzi, despite his best efforts, spun-out and relinquished the lead to Hartmann. Now it was just Carraciola who remained to track down the nameless driver.
But Hartmann's car was to fast for the veteran German to catch and Hartmann streaked past the finish line giving the French team their first win of the season.
Carraciola came in second but poor Varzi limped across the finish line in 8th having had spun-out a second time. This gave the Dairyman's Association driver, Rosemeyer just enough of a chance to capture third in his new Type B Auto Union, that frankly, he had terrible trouble controlling throughout the race.
The attention now turns to Budapest for the next race.
